Keep Holiday Grease Out of Your Drains

Nov 4, 2026

Holiday cooking brings family and friends together, but it can also create trouble for your pipes. Fort Bend County MUD 162 reminds residents to keep F.O.G. (fats, oils, and grease) out of sinks and drains this holiday season. These cooking byproducts can build up in pipes, leading to blockages, sewer backups, and costly repairs.

A Few Simple Steps Can Make a Big Difference

  • Let grease cool. Collect cooled cooking fats and grease in a disposable container and place it in the trash.
  • Wipe before washing. Use a paper towel to remove grease from pots, pans, and dishes before putting them in the sink or dishwasher.
  • Scrape food scraps into the trash. Use a sink strainer to catch scraps before they enter the drain.
  • Don’t rely on hot water or the garbage disposal. Neither prevents grease from collecting in pipes and causing clogs.

By keeping fats, oils, and grease out of your drains, you can help protect your home’s plumbing, our community’s sewer system, and local waterways. Make proper grease disposal part of your holiday cleanup.
